Our History

silver-key-about

Silver Key Senior Services was founded in 1970 to improve the quality of life for those in nursing homes. Three leaders left their mark on Silver Key including founder Betsey Myers-Burroughs and advocate Clifford King, along with a group of conscientious citizens. With the help of these individuals and first Executive Director Mikki Kraushaar, Silver Key officially opened its doors in October 1971 with funding from the Older Americans’ Act for one staff member.

From these humble beginnings, a Nursing Home Volunteer Program was introduced to help alleviate the effects of isolation and loneliness for elderly persons living in local care facilities. It was not long before Silver Key broadened its mission to include seniors who desired to remain in their homes as they aged.

Today Silver Key annually serves more than 7,000 seniors in El Paso County Colorado each year with a wide variety of needs and is a well-known resource for its older citizens.

Since 1970, Silver Key has helped more than 250,000 seniors remain safe and independent through Transportation, Nutrition and Senior Assistance services. Silver Key's 60+ employees and 650+ volunteers work together to provide services to area residents over the age of 60.
