Roam: A Hero's Heart
A Heartfelt Poem by, Cheryl Hann - Silver Key Member
There once was a dog named Roam so brave, a German Shepard strong, people to save. With fur of black and tan so bright, he worked with his handler day and night.
Roam was a police dog, loyal and true. He had important work to do. He’d search and protect with all his might. Keeping his community safe, day and night.
At just eighteen months still young and fast, Roam loved his job-he’d found it at last! His handler an officer kind and strong, trusted Roam as they worked along.
One day while helping Roam got hurt, he had to be very brave. The doctors worked hard through the night to help our hero win this fight.
When Roam woke up, something had changed, his body felt a little strange. One of his back legs was no longer there. But his handler helped him with love and care.
“You’re still my Roam” his handler said, gently stroking his noble head. “Three legs or four, you’re brave and true, there’s nothing that can change my love for you.”
The doctors said Roam would be just fine. That he’d adapt and heal with time/ “Dogs are resilient, strong and smart. What matters most is Roams big heart.”
Roam was retired from his police career. But there was nothing at all to fear. His handler said, “Come home with me, you’ll be my special pet and we’ll be family.”
At home Roam learned to run and play. Getting stronger every single day. He’d hop and jump and wag his tail. This three-legged hero would never fail!
He learned to balance, strong and steady. For his next adventure always ready. He’d fetch his ball and go for walks, his handler gave him treats and talks.
Roam showed the world with courage true, that losing a leg doesn’t change what you can do. He was still. Roam-so brave and strong, still the Hero he’d been all along.
So, if you lost something that makes you feel small. Remember brave Roam standing tall. What’s inside your heart is what matters most. That’s the thing you should treasure and boast.
You’re still amazing and true. Theres nothing in this world you cannot do. Like Roam you’ll adapt and find your way, growing stronger every single day.
Roam lives happy now, loved and free. With his handler- The best family. A hero’s heart beats just as strong, whether on three legs or four all along.
Dedicated to all the heroes, both two legged and four, who protect and serve, and to every child who has shown courage in the face of challenge.
